Richard Alan Pope, 68, of Gustine, passed away on February 23, 2021 in Lubbock, Texas. Funeral services will be held Saturday February 27th at 10 am at the Heartland Funeral Home in Comanche, Texas. Richard was born in Mineral Wells, Texas to Delbert and Ruthie Pope on December 15th, 1952. He married the love of his life Debbie Greenway on December 28, 1971 in Dublin, Texas. Richard loved to work hard and provide for his family. He was in the dairy business for over 33 years. He purchased his first dairy at 18 years of age. He was always innovative and strove to improve his business every day. After leaving the dairy business he continued to raise cattle, cantaloupes, and watermelons. Richard had a great passion for horses. His special abilities were training young horses. His understanding of young horses was amazing. He was recognized by the American Quarter Horse Association for raising and breeding horses for over 25 years and showed competitively in the National Cutting Horse Association for over 20 years. Richard strove to ensure that his children always had great horses to ride and compete on. His grandkids are still riding and winning on the horses that he raised for them. He was an active member of the Gustine Rodeo Club. He took great joy in sharing his knowledge to help any kid be successful. Richard was well known for his generosity to anyone who needed help and for his larger-than-life personality. Everyone loved to see him walk in the room because you never knew what story you were going to hear. Richard is preceded in death by his mother and father. Richard is survived by his wife Debbie, daughter Darcie and Calvin Pareo of Portales New Mexico, daughter Crystal and husband Kerry Drew of Gustine, and son Adam and wife Kara Pope of Abilene. His grandchildren Cutter, Louann, Taylor, Talon, Aubrey, Iyesha, and Dylan and one great grandchild Colt. His brother David and sisters Barbara and Beth along with many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Davis and all the nurses that assisted with care at the Comanche County Medical enter.
